The Government of India has announced a new SIM-binding rule for messaging apps, effective from March 1, 2026. Apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Snapchat, ShareChat, GeoChat, RTO, and Josh will no longer function on a device without a SIM card. Computer users will be automatically logged out every six hours. The deadline of February 28 remains unchanged.

Authorities stated the rule is aimed at preventing cyber fraud. Currently, users can log in via OTP even without a SIM, but after the new regulation, that facility will no longer be available. Companies will have to report compliance within 120 days, and violations will be handled under the Telecommunication Act 2023, Telecom Cyber Security Rules, and other relevant laws.
