A woman finance-company employee, accused in a vehicle-seizure case, has denied all allegations of wrongdoing. “The bank had authorised repossession,” she says, claiming that CCTV footage exists — and that she will present it in court. “We did not act by force,” she insists, alleging that police are wrongly detaining her.

Her statement raises serious questions about the legality of vehicle-repossession practices in India. According to a recent ruling of Patna High Court, banks and financial institutions are not allowed to forcibly seize vehicles of loan-defaulters via recovery agents or muscle-men — such repossessions must follow due process under law and cannot violate a person’s right to life and livelihood.
