In a heart-wrenching incident from the village of Sāmākuṇḍ in Malkangiri district, Odisha, a patient had to be carried on a makeshift stretcher (khatiā) for over 5 kilometers due to the unavailability of an ambulance and poor road conditions. The ambulance could not reach the remote village because of the damaged roads, forcing the villagers to take extreme measures to ensure the patient received medical attention.
