In a tragic dowry-related violence case, a woman named Lucy allegedly died after repeated mental and physical torture by her in-laws over dowry demands in Andola village under Khaira Police Station, Balasore district (Odisha), her family has alleged. Lucy’s sister and mother mourned, saying she was beaten and harassed until the end, and that repeated complaints to the local police at Shosh Police Station area in Padhiaarpalli village, Keonjhar district, were ignored despite their suffering.

Lucy was originally married to Uttam Kumar Biswal in a traditional ceremony, with her husband’s side demanding dowry at the time of marriage. According to the family, one month after the wedding, in-laws began pressuring Lucy for more dowry, subjecting her to sustained mental and physical abuse that worsened over time. Despite multiple visits to the police with complaints, the family says no action was taken.

Ultimately, Lucy’s condition deteriorated, and she was later admitted to a hospital in Bhadrak, where she is said to have died. The family has accused the in-laws of being responsible for her death and demanded justice, while police have registered a case and begun investigation into the circumstances, including allegations of murder vs. claims of suicide, as stated by Lucy’s father-in-law. The family also alleges they have not been shown Lucy’s one-and-a-half-year-old son, raising further concerns during the probe.
