Amid intense political discussion over a joint candidate in the Rajya Sabha election in Odisha, senior Congress leader Niranjan Patnaik has defended the new equation between the Indian National Congress and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). He said party workers earlier accepted the BJP-BJD equation and will similarly accept the Congress-BJD arrangement now. According to Patnaik, politics in India is no longer strictly driven by ideology but by political convenience, and the current understanding between Congress and BJD has emerged out of necessity. He added that if the equation continues, it could benefit both parties in the future and expressed hope that incidents like “horse-trading” seen in past Rajya Sabha elections may not occur this time, though he noted that money power can sometimes influence outcomes.
