Serious irregularities have come to light in the disbursement of old-age and widow pensions in Odisha. In some cases, living beneficiaries were allegedly declared “dead”, leading to stoppage of their pension. In others, even after crossing 95 years of age and meeting all eligibility criteria, senior citizens have not received their old-age pension.

This comes despite the Chief Minister’s announcement in the recent Budget that no eligible person would have to wait for old-age or widow pension. However, ground reports reveal that poor beneficiaries are still struggling, with some running from pillar to post for nearly 20 years without receiving any support.
