The face of begging in Odisha is evolving alarmingly, with brokers (dalals) now "renting" or hiring small, frail-looking children—often infants and toddlers—to evoke maximum sympathy from passersby, believing people are more likely to donate when seeing vulnerable kids. These non-Odiya gangs exploit the perception that tiny, weak-appearing children fetch higher earnings by placing them strategically on busy streets and traffic signals. In a major breakthrough, Berhampur (Brahmapur) police in Ganjam district busted a Mumbai-style child begging racket on March 5, 2026. They rescued 9 minor children (aged from 4 months to 12 years, including 3 girls) who were allegedly forced to beg at key locations like PVN Rao Square. Five accused—including four women—were arrested: Mani Sindhe (65), Ajaya Kajri Sindhe (30), Rani Sindhe (30), Puja Power (20), and Sita Power (40). The gang reportedly operated for months, leaving children at busy spots while collecting earnings. The rescued kids were produced before the Child Welfare Committee and shifted to shelter homes for care and rehabilitation. Police acted on a tip-off, highlighting the organized, exploitative nature of such rackets involving child trafficking elements. Authorities urge vigilance and reporting suspicious cases to curb this growing menace.
