The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to convene its core committee meeting today in Bhubaneswar to deliberate on selecting its candidate for the upcoming Nuapada Assembly by-election, scheduled for November 11, 2025. The meeting will be attended by key party leaders, including BJP Odisha in-charge Vijaypal Singh Tomar, General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santhosh, senior leader V. Satish, and state unit president Manmohan Samal. The committee aims to finalize a shortlist of contenders and forward it to the BJP parliamentary board for approval. Prominent names under consideration include former state BJP president Basanta Panda, his son and 2024 nominee Abhinandan Panda, party member Jadumani Panigrahi, and Khariar Road NAC chairperson Sonia Jain. Abhinandan Panda has expressed his interest in the ticket, stating that he would fully support the party's nominee regardless of the decision. Sonia Jain echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the final decision rests with the party leadership and will be accepted by all.

The Nuapada bypoll was necessitated by the unfortunate demise of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA Rajendra Dholakia. His son, Jay Dholakia, who was initially expected to be the BJD's candidate, has recently joined the BJP, marking a significant development in the political landscape of the region. The Congress party has already announced Ghasiram Majhi, a senior tribal leader and the district president, as its candidate for the by-election. This sets the stage for a triangular contest involving the BJP, BJD, and Congress, making the upcoming bypoll a crucial political event in Odisha.
