A strong earthquake struck Kolkata and surrounding areas on Friday afternoon at around 1:22 pm IST, with tremors felt across the city and parts of West Bengal after a quake of around 5.4–5.5 magnitude on the Richter scale was recorded near Bangladesh’s border region, prompting panic among residents who quickly rushed outside their homes and offices for safety.
One resident described the experience saying, “We were sitting on our sofa when we suddenly felt the tremors. We rushed out of our house. The sofa and fan were shaking, a bottle kept on a table fell down. All of us have rushed downstairs…”, capturing the fear many felt as the building swayed.
Officials reported that although tremors were widely felt and caused alarm, there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties so far, and seismic activity is being monitored by authorities as aftershocks remain a possibility.
