On a Monday in the Margashira month, a large gathering of bhaktas (devotees) rushed early morning to the sacred Baisi Pahacha (twenty-two steps) in Puri to catch a glimpse of Mahaprabhu. The intense rush (“dha daura”) reflects their deep devotion as they climb the steps to see the divine “chakā ākhi” (glittering eyes) of the deity.

This surge of faith demonstrates how pilgrimage traditions still thrive — with devotees braving the steep ascent and the crowd for a moment of sacred vision.

Baisi Pahacha, part of the Sri Jagannath Temple complex, carries profound spiritual significance. According to tradition, ascending these 22 steps is not just a physical act but a journey of redemption — devotees believe their ancestors’ souls are honoured here.
