In a major anti-Maoist operation in Kandhamal district, security forces shot dead five Maoists, including top leader Ganesh Uike. The encounter is being seen as a significant setback to Maoist activities in the region.

Among those killed was 69-year-old Ganesh Uike, a frontline member of the Maoist Central Committee, who carried a cash reward of ₹1 crore 10 lakh on his head. Of the five Maoists neutralised in the operation, two were women, according to sources.

The operation has dealt a major blow to the Maoist network in Kandhamal, with security forces continuing efforts to curb left-wing extremism in the area.
