In Bhubaneswar’s Salia Sahi slum, PCC President Bhakta Charan Das has reacted strongly to the ongoing eviction drive. The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) are clearing parts of the slum to make way for a 13-km parallel road project between Ekamra Kanana and Andharua.

Das highlighted the long-standing presence of Adivasi families in the area, who have lived there for years — often on forest land — and argued that they deserve not to be forcibly evicted. He called for land acquisition to be regularised: “Yes, evict for development, but give them pattas (land titles) with compensation for the land taken.”

He has asked for a three-day dialogue with the BMC Commissioner to secure legitimate tenure for the residents. Many of the slum dwellers, especially from tribal backgrounds, have been pressing for land rights under the Forest Rights Act and demand what they see as fair and permanent settlement.
