Local residents in Patnagarh, Balangir district (Odisha) observed a 12-hour bandh today, shutting down shops and markets, to press their demand for OPD and medicine ward facilities at the old sub-divisional hospital. The protest comes after authorities relocated healthcare services to a new facility, leaving the old hospital building vacant and inconvenient for patients.

Protesters, including local men and women, sat on the main road from 6 AM to 6 PM, urging the government to restore outpatient services and medicine availability at the original hospital so that people — especially those unable to travel — can access treatment locally. According to locals, the move to the new hospital has forced patients to travel about 3 km for basic healthcare, creating hardship for elderly and low-income families. The police were deployed in significant numbers to ensure peace during the bandh, and no major incidents were reported.

Healthcare infrastructure in Patnagarh has long been a concern for residents, with past reports noting issues like the new hospital building remaining unused during rains and waterlogging affecting services.
