While opium cultivation is commonly reported in districts like Kandhamal, Rayagada and Malkangiri, police have now detected large-scale poppy cultivation in the Rourkela Police District. According to the Rourkela SP, the total value of the seized opium crop is estimated to be around ₹1 crore.

Police and the Excise Department jointly destroyed opium cultivation spread across nearly 9 acres of land. In connection with the case, two youths have been detained.
