The state government of Odisha has appointed Madhuri Dixit as the brand ambassador for its handloom sector, a move intended to boost promotion of traditional weaves and support local artisans.

However, BJD MLA Arun Kumar Sahoo has accused the government of giving Madhuri Dixit ₹ 1.60 crore for her stay, food, travel and related expenses — questioning whether such a large payout for a “brand ambassador” is justified.

This allegation has triggered a controversy over the use of public funds. While the government says the appointment aims to support Odisha’s handloom weavers, critics argue that the costs are excessive and demand full transparency.
