Odisha is shifting to automated vehicle fitness testing! Previously, fitness certificates were issued based on visual/manual inspections, but now vehicles will undergo objective, machine-based tests at Automated Testing Stations (ATS). The state's first fully state-owned ATS (India's first of its kind) is operational at Cuttack under Cuttack RTO, with plans to expand to 21 more centres statewide. This ensures transparent, error-free checks for roadworthiness, including pollution norms (PUC integration), reducing human bias and enhancing safety. Transport authorities (including warnings from the minister/commissioner) have cautioned that vehicles without valid fitness or PUC will not be allowed on roads—registrations may be cancelled, vehicles seized, and unfit ones directed for scrapping. This aligns with central Motor Vehicle Rules and Odisha's push for safer roads amid rising accidents, especially targeting school buses, commercial vehicles, and older models.
