The State Election Commission of Odisha has begun preparations for the upcoming Notified Area Council (NAC) elections that are due to be held within June this year. NACs are semi-urban local bodies created by the government to strengthen urban governance and civic administration in growing towns across the state.

Under the law, once a NAC is notified, elections must be completed within six months to form its council. This year, the notification of several new NACs in different districts triggered the requirement for elections, which the election authorities have slated for completion by the end of June 2026. Officials are currently engaged in delimitation of wards, preparation of electoral rolls and administrative setup to ensure that polling is conducted smoothly and transparently.

The NAC polls will be an important step in decentralised urban governance, giving residents of these growing areas the opportunity to elect their local representatives to manage civic amenities and development projects at the local level.
