Residents of Kalabuda Gram Panchayat in Kendrapara district are in despair after hordes of Kalimundi insects reportedly attacked and devoured their stored paddy and crops, wiping out their harvests overnight. The pests struck homes, courtyards and fields — leading villagers to fear for their food security and livelihood.

“They ate up everything — the harvested paddy, our stored grain — there’s nothing left,” said one local resident, reflecting the anguish and desperation spreading through the community. The devastation comes on the heels of earlier crop losses in the district, when the same pests ravaged groundnut and rabi fields across several blocks.
