In Bhubaneswar’s Lingipur area, Odisha, a massive fire broke out late Monday night at a supermarket in a four-storey complex and raged for over 18 hours, with firefighters facing intense heat and structural challenges before finally bringing it under control; Deputy Fire Officer Narayan Das explained to media how the blaze spread quickly through the building’s upper floors due to highly flammable goods stored inside and the lack of proper ventilation, highlighting the difficulty in accessing smoke-filled interiors during the prolonged operation. Fire services deployed dozens of tenders, foam units, and even drilled holes to release smoke as two staff members trapped inside were rescued safely, while no casualties were reported, though extensive property loss running into crores of rupees has been estimated. Officials have underscored the need for better fire safety compliance in commercial buildings in the wake of this major incident.
