In a rare and shocking incident from Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary near Bhubaneswar, a young tusker named ‘Palang’ attacked the preserved skeleton of another tusker, Ramu, nearly a year after Ramu’s death.

Forest officials had exhumed Ramu’s remains from his burial site in Bharatpur forest for preservation and kept the skeleton in a temporary shed near the Bharatpur watchtower. However, over two consecutive nights, Palang broke into the secured shed, damaged the solar fencing, smashed chemical containers, and even crushed Ramu’s skull using his tusks.

Forest officials believe the incident could be driven by long-standing rivalry, as Palang was unable to approach Ramu when he was alive. Following the repeated attacks, the skeleton has now been shifted to the Bharatpur Forest Range Office, where initial chemical preservation has already been completed and the remains are now kept under protection.

The incident has left wildlife experts astonished, highlighting the complex memory and behavioural traits of elephants.
