The roots of the Ganjam sand mafia have reportedly spread to neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, prompting the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to expand its investigation beyond Odisha. The probe aims to trace how far the illegal sand mining network operating in Ganjam extends.

The ED is investigating the financial and operational links of alleged sand mafia mastermind Krupasindhu Muduli, who is accused of running illegal sand trade in Ganjam for several years. As part of the investigation, ED teams have reportedly conducted searches across six states. The agency is also examining the source of around ₹2.5 crore in cash recovered during raids.

Three days ago, ED carried out a raid at the residence of BJD leader Hrushikesh Padhi in Ganjam. Subsequently, frequent searches were conducted at the premises of 8 to 10 influential sand and liquor mafia operatives in the district. During these raids, large sums of cash found in cupboards are under scrutiny. Investigators have also found major clues linking the sand mafia to illegal country liquor brewing units operating in Ganjam.
