After Inter-Caste Marriage, Family Alleges Clan Ostracism — Police Case Filed in Odisha

A family in Munishipentha village under Chhatrapur police station has accused members of their clan of ostracising them after their son, belonging to the Additional Tahsildar’s family, married a girl from another caste. The complainants claim they were barred from participating in the traditional clan, insulted, and even excluded from the marriage feast. A formal complaint has now been lodged at the police station.

The accused belong to the Kaibartta community, which denies any formal ostracism and says the matter is under discussion. Community leaders and the concerned family are scheduled to meet soon under the larger social-group committee to decide on further action.

This incident raises serious concerns about caste-based discrimination persisting in rural Odisha — even after the legal safeguards for intercaste marriages. The case could become a test of whether social justice and social acceptance go hand in hand.
