A second-year MBBS student from Jaleswar, Odisha, was allegedly gang-raped near a private medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal, on Friday night. The 23-year-old victim had gone out for dinner with a male classmate when the assault occurred. The assailants reportedly took her to a secluded area behind the college campus, where the crime took place. The victim's father suspects the involvement of her male classmate and has raised concerns about the circumstances leading to the incident. The classmate has been detained for questioning. The victim is currently undergoing medical treatment at the college hospital. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and has sought a report from the West Bengal police within five days. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to take swift action against the perpetrators. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with political leaders and doctors' forums demanding justice and strict action against those responsible.
