A team from the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal, led by newly appointed Chairperson Justice Bela M. Trivedi, is in Odisha conducting a field inspection of key river infrastructure amid the long‑running Mahanadi water‑sharing dispute with Chhattisgarh; after crucial discussions in Burla, the tribunal members visited the Hirakud Dam spillway area near Sambalpur to examine conditions at the reservoir and related facilities as part of a five‑day assessment scheduled until March 2.

The visit comes as both states await an equitable resolution under the Inter‑State River Water Disputes Act after years of contention over upstream water usage affecting downstream flows into the Hirakud reservoir. Members are also expected to review water utilisation during lean seasons as part of the tribunal’s evaluation process.

This on‑ground assessment forms a crucial stage in the tribunal’s efforts to gather technical and hydrological data that may shape the final decision on sharing the Mahanadi waters, which has significant implications for irrigation, drinking water and ecological balance in the region.
