At the Srimandir in Puri, special Makar Sankranti rituals will be held for Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra, beginning with the eve celebration where the deities are dressed in Nabanka Besha with rice and flower offerings by temple sevayats and priests from traditional monasteries, followed on Makar Sankranti by elaborate Makara Chaurashi Besha with symbolic ornaments and the offering of Makara Chaula and other festive foods as devotees gather to witness the Uttarayana rites marking the Sun’s northward journey, a unique seasonal and cultural observance in the holy temple of Odisha.
