On February 12, 2026, a retired NALCO officer and his wife (a retired lecturer) from Bhubaneswar fell victim to a sophisticated "digital arrest" scam, confined to their home for nearly 35 hours as fraudsters posing as CBI/ED officials via video calls accused them of money laundering linked to a fake parcel. The scammers coerced them into transferring Rs 1 crore (though they lost Rs 60 lakhs before realizing), threatening arrest and isolating them from family. The couple reported to Bhubaneswar Cyber Police after escaping the ordeal, highlighting the dangers of blindly trusting unknown callers in such high-pressure tactics. This incident underscores rising cyber frauds in Odisha, with over Rs 1,442 crore lost statewide in recent years.
