Undertrial Prisoner from Dumuduma Dies in AIIMS Hospital; Family Alleges Jail Beating

An undertrial prisoner named Kana Das, lodged at Jharpada Jail, has died while undergoing treatment at AIIMS Hospital in Bhubaneswar, his family has reported. Kana, a resident of Dumuduma area, had been in jail since last year in connection with a pending case and had been suffering poor health for a long time.

During his imprisonment, he was repeatedly taken for medical treatment to Cuttack Capital Hospital, other facilities, and finally to AIIMS Hospital, where his condition worsened and he was admitted to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit). Last night, hospital authorities informed his family of his death.

Kana was the only son of widow Tamal Das, who alleges that her son was beaten in jail and has filed a written complaint at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar for a post-mortem and investigation into the circumstances of his death.
