Two convicts released on parole have gone missing after failing to return to Bhubaneswar’s Jharpada Jail, raising serious concerns over lapses in the state prison system. The absconding prisoners are Sushil Digal of Phulbani, convicted in a murder case, and Ranjit Nayak of Dhenkanal, convicted in a rape case.

Sushil Digal, who is serving a life sentence for murder, has been absconding for over a year after going on parole. Meanwhile, Ranjit Nayak, sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment in a rape case, has been on the run since October last year.

The incident has exposed alleged negligence in the state jail administration, as reports reveal that more than 50 prisoners across various jails in Odisha have failed to return after parole or leave. Taking serious note of the matter, the High Court has expressed concern and, following its directions, the Director General of Prisons appeared before the court in person.
