Mahrishi Jani, a student traveller, says he was booked on a 6:15 am flight from Kolkata to Guwahati — a connecting flight scheduled to take him to the Smart India Hackathon 2025 at North-Eastern Hill University. But when IndiGo cancelled and delayed flights nationwide, he and his six-member team (with two mentors) lost their chance to participate. They were left with no viable transportation; a train journey would take three days, forcing them to return home.

“This was a rare opportunity,” said Jani. “After 6–7 months of preparation, all our hard work is wasted.” The disappointment is palpable — what should have been a milestone achievement turned into a frustrating let-down because of airline disruption.

This incident highlights how widespread flight cancellations and airline instability can derail important academic or competitive events — affecting not only travel plans but the future prospects of young participants.
