In Kalabuda village of Garadapur block, Kendrapara district, residents are living in fear as swarms of Kalimundi pests reportedly invaded homes, fields and storehouses — even eating stored paddy sitting inside houses. Villagers claim the insects struck without warning, turning their homes and lives upside down.

One resident lamented: “They sat on our harvest and ate it — we never imagined such pests existed.” The terror has made people afraid to step outside; daily life has been disrupted amid anxiety over safety and food security.

This invasion follows a broader outbreak of Kalimundi pests across Kendrapara that destroyed groundnut and other rabi crops, leaving many farmers reeling from heavy losses. Despite earlier warnings and some advisories, such incidents highlight the fragility of rural livelihoods and the urgent need for effective pest-control measures and community support.
