Ramchandra, who has been addicted to opium for the past five decades, claims he cannot eat or sleep without consuming it. His dependence has grown so severe that he now takes 40 grams of opium daily. The Excise Department issues him opium through a special card based on a doctor’s advice, but he says this quantity is no longer enough.

In his plea before the High Court, Ramchandra has requested an increase to 60 grams per day. The court has taken his application seriously and advised that he must also undergo proper medical treatment to free himself from the addiction.

Over the years, his craving has intensified — from 15 grams to 22 grams, and now 40 grams. When he does not get opium, he becomes uncontrollable and feels as if life itself stops. His story highlights the deep impact of long-term substance dependence.
