A dramatic scene unfolded in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district where a childless couple staged a protest in front of the District Collector’s office, demanding the return of an abandoned infant they had rescued and raised. The incident highlights an emotional conflict between humanitarian care and legal child protection procedures.

According to sources, the couple had found a newborn baby boy in a critical condition inside a forest on December 9 while grazing goats. The infant was rescued by Musa Naik, who brought the child home and informed the ASHA worker, Anganwadi worker, village sarpanch and village president, after which the couple took care of the baby.

However, about a month later, the Child Welfare Committee and the Child Protection Department, with police assistance, reached the village and took custody of the child citing welfare norms. Aggrieved by the move, the couple attempted self-harm in protest, pleading for the child to be returned to them.
