As preparations for Makar Sankranti gather momentum, sweet makers at Mandal Bazaar in Balasore district are busy crafting a wide range of traditional festival sweets. These colourful and attractive sweets are prepared especially for the harvest festival, when people perform puja using chuda (flattened rice) and various types of sweets, and also follow the custom of sending sweets from parents’ homes to their daughters’ homes.
