In the Nuapada region of Odisha, independent candidate Lochan Singh Majhi is adopting a grassroots campaign strategy by cycling from village to village and house to house to seek votes. Unlike the high-spend rallies of the BJP, BJD and Congress, Majhi is relying on his own strength and direct interaction with voters.
“I ride my bicycle and visit each household personally,” says Majhi, who is contesting for the sixth time and wants to show that cost-effective campaigning is possible. His modest approach stands in sharp contrast to the high-voltage electioneering of mainstream parties.
Majhi has contested five previous elections and is now trying again as an independent candidate, using his bicycle as his campaign vehicle and emphasising personal connect over expenditure.
