A massive blaze ripped through the fruit market near the Collector’s office in Balangir last evening, reducing more than 50 shops to ashes. Vendors lost not only their stock — fruits, cash, bikes, refrigerators — but also their livelihoods. For many, the daily earnings that sustained small families have vanished overnight.

Displaced shopkeepers now demand immediate relief and compensation. Local municipal leaders have promised ₹10,000 aid per affected vendor, temporary shop arrangements, and upgrades to market infrastructure. While relief measures offer hope, for many vendors the road ahead remains uncertain and fraught with hardship.

This tragic incident underscores the vulnerability of small-scale vendors and the urgent need for stronger fire-safety measures, market planning, and social security to protect livelihoods when disaster strikes.
